Use the World as a Muse, Not a Mirror
The World is not Your Mirror
It’s Really All About Love!
Social Media people talk of bubbles and silos, and from an outsider’s perspective, they are very clear to see. Cliques, also! Is this unique to that world? Of course not! The behavior starts from our earliest bondings and strengthens markedly in school. For some, there is the yearning to belong and for others, the need to elevate themselves above those who are not in their specific crowd.
Crowds can be based around nationalities, religions, specific locations, sports teams, healthy or unhealthy eating, political persuasion, sexual preferences, social standing, professions, social media platforms, age, body size and virtually any interest. For each, there are belief systems, and for each, the view of the world is tilted towards those that are gleaned from peers. There is the temptation to presume that the views of the few are really those of the many.
We believe we are looking at the world, but our perception of it is likely to be remarkably similar to that which we might see if we refocused our attentions inwards. It’s only natural, surely! Seeing oneself as being too different from the world around us might lead to unhealthy insularity and depression. We are a social species, after all. And we are so very, very small in a universe so large and unknown.
It’s all OK though. It is what it is. The truth, that we’re actually only in control of ourselves, and even then not fully, doesn’t suit everyone. Some will try to exert influence on others, and some may choose to let them. We are not the only creatures with hierarchies. We are the only one that can choose which structures we adhere to without perishing.
When you look at the world, see its wonder, its beauty, its awe inspiring hugeness. See the awful things some of our species do. Understand that adulation is false love. Look into the eyes of passers’ by and perceive of the thoughts that engulf them. Seek out the naturally smiling faces. Feel the love. It’s the only true currency. The Beatles were right – it really is all you need. And as The Troggs sang, it’s all around you! Silos and bubbles might obscure that wonderful truth.
