In this modern era, humans have started to preserve as much knowledge as possible. “Cave paintings” were considered as the first form of converting knowledge into accessible information. The evolution of knowledge transformation and management has come a considerable way.
Today, it goes beyond books, paintings or even the hieroglyphics. The 20th century introduced information management and computer documentation. These seem to be some of the first few tools of online knowledge management. And, the 21st century has taken the online knowledge base to a new level.
So, how does the online knowledge base look like in the 21st century?
Wouldn’t the answer to this question be: Artificial intelligence?
Definition: Artificial intelligence is a technology where knowledge is captured, shared, carefully developed and transformed into the right format in organizations.
AI is limited to few organizations. But there will be a time when it will become an integral part for all.

Researchers claim that knowledge management is a strategic process where organizations create value from intangible assets. The only problem with intangible assets would be the process of grasping, addressing and transforming them into tangible ones. But what’s important here is that these assets must be made accessible to everyone in the organization.
Artificial Intelligence has become a buzzword. It’s everywhere from information technology to medicine, the automobile sector, home appliances and more. But what really makes this concept interesting is its mention in the sci-fi books and movies. And it became successful in capturing the attention of many science lovers too.
Developments of 1980’s were even more successful in capturing the attention of many spectators. For example, the connection machine developed by Danny Hills in 1981. This machine used parallel computing that helped to bring new power to AI, and to the technology sector in general.
But what’s the ultimate goal? It is to ensure that machines perform tasks just like human beings. AI focuses on giving devices the knowledge and mental capabilities of man. Without knowledge management, AI will become a complicated process.
From the 1980s to the 2000s, Artificial intelligence has seeped into numerous industries. This multidisciplinary stream has many divisions like expert systems, robotics, speech recognition, virtual reality, natural language processing, and more. Of course, all these sciences depend on a neural network.
What is Knowledge Management?
Before you understand the bond between artificial intelligence and knowledge management, you must be clear on what knowledge management is all about.
Knowledge management is a multidisciplinary field that is known to feature cognitive science, psychology, and epistemology. Note epistemology is a branch of philosophy that is concerned with the study on knowledge and rationality.
This multidisciplinary field helps organizations and individuals create, share, use, collaborate and reuse knowledge as much as possible. But it is important that individuals take the initiative to understand more about knowledge management to increase innovation and performance at all levels.
Not only is knowledge management meant for the best in the industry but can also be put to use at all stages to expand and innovate further.
Role of Knowledge in Decision Making
Both artificial intelligence and knowledge management revolve around “knowledge” that can also be treated as a core component. Other than that, artificial intelligence provides all mechanisms to machines that need to accumulate knowledge and learn. It also helps machines acquire knowledge from different sources, process information using systematic rules, and later apply that acquired knowledge in the best places.
Machines should unlock the knowledge stored in their system to make life decisions. After all, “decision making” is a key challenge in artificial intelligence and knowledge management. This is where experts firmly believe that AI and knowledge management are two critical sides of the same coin. They also suggest that without a reliable online knowledge base, machines will not be able to expand, create or even use knowledge in ways mankind has never imagined.
This amazing connection between artificial intelligence and knowledge management has resulted in cognitive computing. By definition, cognitive computing makes the use of several computerized models that stimulate the way our human brain processes things. It involves the use of two major components: deep learning and self-learning neural networks. In fact, software programs used to perform cognitive computing use natural language processors, pattern recognizers, and data/text mining methods to mimic the human brain. So understand that cognitive computing is a pathway to future applications like knowledge management and artificial intelligence.
In the coming years, we will have massive online knowledge bases that will have tons of information, data, and knowledge over which individuals and organizations will have a competitive advantage in the industry. The importance of text analytics and data is increasing drastically. With plenty of online knowledge base and “upcoming” knowledge base software, artificial intelligence and knowledge management are gaining plenty of momentum.
However, the only challenge that we may face would be the presence of unstructured data. In the coming years, industries will see both unstructured and proliferation of structured data. This forces mankind to find ways that uncover knowledge from a lot of resources. In scenarios like these, concepts like “Big data” come into the picture. Cognitive computing serves as a vital tool for extracting information from big data.
Process-centric methods, strategies and inter-organizational aspects of decision making are essential in the design and development of new technologies. This is where people need to realize that there is plenty of scope for academic endeavors in this area. There are plenty of opportunities that provide an insight on how big data processes and minimizes to improve the decision-making abilities of machines.
Undeniably, cognitive computing is the connection between next-generation technologies: artificial intelligence and knowledge management. In fact, industries are considering cognitive computing as a disruptive force. This disruptive force can change the world we live in dramatically. It will have a substantial impact on how we see things, work and live! In fact, cognitive computing, knowledge management, and artificial intelligence have taken control over the work process for most industries.
Most of today’s data is available on the internet. That’s why most companies plan on incorporating an online knowledge base that helps them store necessary data in one place, hassle-free. And, all they have to do is update their knowledge base on a daily basis. This way their knowledge base becomes relevant for readers and data is available online until the time companies decide to remove it.
But this form of Artificial Intelligence integration is basic and is yet to grow. AI integration will establish itself as an important part of our lives in the coming years, therefore making the lives of its users way simpler. So it is a wait and watch time for us to see how AI will develop in the coming years and benefit us all.
