The Multi-Generational Dilemma and The Golden Opportunity

After participating as a mentor in Startup Weekend and leading several adventure travel groups I   realized how powerful collaboration is and it got me thinking about finding ways for different generations to work together through a shared purpose and exploring areas where we can learn from each other.

Throughout 2013 I had the opportunity to travel with Under30Experiences to Nicaragua and Costa Rica with different groups of people from diverse backgrounds. During my conversations with different attendees, I realized that Millennials really want to feel fulfilled at what they do for a living and are simply not willing to settle or waste time working unsatisfying jobs. They truly desire to have a job they are passionate about with a good work-life balance. Millennials have grown up embracing technological advances engaging socially all day long in the digital world for personal and business purposes making them very knowledgeable in the online digital world but as a result, we want immediate results and most of the time we fail to realize that there are universal principles that separate successful from unsuccessful people.

On the other hand, I had the opportunity to have conversations with local Boomers and Genexers who had a basic understanding of the online digital world but their focus was more on business, systems, processes, and principles rather than technology. They see technology just as a tool to do business with and prefer to stick with what works before implementing new technologies. Also, most of them are Subject Matter Experts in one area and need to expand their knowledge into other areas.

From my own personal experience, the way I perceive and use technology is so different from the way other generations before me perceive it. For me, technology has become a critical part of my life since I’m always on and connected socializing and doing business. When I look at my parents and people from other generations, technology is not the center of their social lives and they use technology more for convenience purposes like online banking, shopping, etc.

One of the ways we can close generational gaps is by embracing what previous generations can offer and invite what upcoming generations can provide and creating some sort of fusion between generations recognizing differences and working together in the most efficient way. Together we have an opportunity to shed some light on this very important topic and take the first step by discussing our differences and exploring areas where we can help each other grow. Millennials can take control of their future by understanding the processes and principles that Genexers and Boomers have used sharing what has worked and discarding what hasn’t.

Let’s come up with a global consensus on how we can improve our future together because we really gain nothing by focusing on each generation’s weaknesses and mistakes.
